Ok, now that my chemo treatments have come to an end...so have the five days that I take steroids. And unfortantely, so does my incredible desire and determination to bake and clean. The steroids totally jack me up and cause me to want to tackle tasks that I normally could care less about. So, understandably, my family is much chagrinned to learn there may be no more steroid iinspired meals and treats. Does this mean no more blueberry muffins at 6am on a Sunday morning...or weekly banana bread after the bunch has gone brown...crockpot chili...beer chicken...sloppy joe buttermilk biscuits...or chocolate chip cookies?
Calm down...everybody take a breath. I think I have learned a lot about myself during the journey. And I admit, I do like the response I get from the family when I surprise them with some culinary creation they weren't expecting. And now that I know I can do it...it doesn't seem daunting or difficult anymore. They key is to have the proper items on hand...baking soda and baking powder. I didn't know there was a difference until recently. Toss in some eggs, flour and sugar and maybe some various flavorings like vanilla or cinnamon...and you can make a lot of different stuff. Not hard...you just need to be prepared.
I know my family is secretly hoping the doctor will give me a low dose steroid...to take maybe weekly or bi-weekly...just enough to keep the good eats coming. But I think I can accomodate their needs...while being drug-free!
